An attractive authority score does not prove that a backlink opportunity is useful for your business. A good assessment considers the publisher, audience, page context, editorial standards, and the reason for the link. Third-party metrics can support research, but they should not replace judgment about relevance and credibility.

If you want support applying these decisions, explore our backlink building & outreach service.

Start with audience and topic relevance

Ask whether the publication reaches people who could reasonably care about your expertise, product, or service. Review the surrounding articles and the specific page where the link would appear. A genuine industry resource may be more useful than an unrelated website with a larger score. Consider the visitor’s experience: would following the link add information or context? If the connection is difficult to explain, the opportunity may be poorly matched.

Review editorial context and standards

Examine how the publication selects topics, identifies authors, and supports factual claims. Look for a coherent audience and a credible reason for the content. A link placed within a useful explanation differs from an isolated list of unrelated businesses. Review recent material rather than judging only the homepage. Ask who controls the wording and destination, and whether the placement accurately represents your business and the information being referenced.

Interpret DA and DR within their own tools

Moz Domain Authority and Ahrefs Domain Rating are different third-party metrics. DA is not a Google ranking factor; DR compares backlink-profile strength within Ahrefs’ database. They should not be treated as interchangeable labels or guarantees of quality. Use them alongside relevant referring domains, content context, and other observations. Comparing a score across unrelated tools can create a false sense of precision in the decision.

Clarify paid versus editorial relationships

Understand whether the opportunity is an independent editorial reference, a sponsorship, or another promotional arrangement. Google’s link policies address links intended to manipulate rankings, and paid promotional links require appropriate qualification. Do not confuse purchasing a placement with earning editorial endorsement. Agree disclosure and link attributes where relevant. The commercial arrangement should be transparent enough that both your team and readers can understand the relationship.

Record outcomes beyond the placement count

Document the source, destination, context, and confirmed link attributes. Review referral visits and enquiries where data is available, while recognizing that not every useful reference generates immediate traffic. Track the quality of the overall profile rather than celebrating every new domain equally. A practical report separates outreach activity, confirmed placements, and observed performance so the business can assess progress without assuming that a higher count proves better results.
